A Special Place To Share

Diana Hadley

The loss of my dad on Nov. 12 encourages me to reflect on the personal lives all of us lead as we try to keep our professional lives in some kind of order.

The varied ages of the members of IHSPA represent the entire life cycle. As younger advisers are planning their own weddings or celebrating the births of their children, others are attending soccer games, planning graduations and weddings for their children, or caring for relatives who are battling health problems.

Most of us would say, “Family comes first,” but our reality is the effort good teachers make to meet their school responsibilities even when family issues are profound. Teachers are lucky to have personal/sick days, but many have sat in an emergency room and made lesson plans for a substitute teacher as they waited for a diagnosis.

That brings us back to the purpose of this organization: to support each other with both routine professional issues and the more personal ones. I have appreciated the many gestures of support from members over the last couple of weeks, and I hope every member knows that IHSPA is a place to share good news and bad with colleagues who care.
