With a multitude of freedom of expression issues in the national and international news lately, it seems like perfect timing to make our annual trip to the Indiana Statehouse to celebrate IHSPA’s favorite amendment.

Click the following link to see information about this year’s keynote speaker, new Indianapolis Star publisher and president Karen Crotchfelt, and a variety of First Amendment contests. All advisers should receive a mailing with these materials by the beginning of next week.  (Anyone who doesn’t receive a mailing should send me contact information.)

Advisers who would like to extend the day’s opportunities, might want to contact the Statehouse at 317.233.5293 or 812.233.0589 to arrange a tour. (Options for tours range from ½ to 1½ hours, and Statehouse guides can handle large groups.) I can also help you arrange to speak to journalists who are covering this year’s legislative session if you are interested.

The symposium is free, and registration isn’t required; but it helps us plan for chairs and refreshments, if we have some advance notice. Bus passes for the Indiana State Historical Society parking lot are available through me as well.

I look forward to hearing from you with contest entries and Student Journalist of the Year applications by Feb. 15.  Let me know if there is anything I can do to help make this trip a reality for your staffs.

And finally, let me mention that the Eastern Illinois University Journalism Department is partnering with the McCormick Foundation, the Illinois Press Foundation and the Illinois JEA to offer another free three-day Multimedia Workshop for high school journalism teachers and advisers March 4-6 on the EIU campus in Charleston.

Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri or Wisconsin advisers, as well as those in Illinois are encouraged to attend. Two teachers from Louisville, Ky., attended the workshop in September. You can get more information about the workshop by clicking on the link below.
