Convention Ready For ‘Good Old Days’ Of The Future

Diana Hadley

There is much IHSPA news to share, but first let me answer the question of the week: Must a check accompany the convention registration form? Answer: The check can be sent later. The main thing we want right now is the number of people your school plans to bring so that we canmake an accurate order for chairs, lunches, and other convention materials. While we like to start finalizing those tabulations on October 1, we can remain “flexible” up to the week of the convention. I have already received several registrations, and that is helpful to have time to process all the details.

Thanks to convention planners Rachel McCarver, Nicole Wilson and Melissa Deavers, the program is completed and there is a sample that includes all the sessions on the IHSPA website so that you and your staffs can plan for the day. You will notice that there are many sessions in a variety of journalism topics. To download a copy just click the “Get Connected” icon on the IHSPA website.
Since we announced our convention speaker, George Srour, North Central High School graduate and 2001 State and National Journalist of the Year, he has received even more recognition for his Building Tomorrow Foundation. To see a video about Building Tomorrow and the presentation of $500,000 to it at this week’s Clinton Global Initiative, go to the link HERE and fast forward to 35.30 (after the Hillary Clinton speech).
As keynote speaker, George is going to describe the journalism skills that helped him build this program. He will stay after the keynote speech to answer questions if students want to use this as a story in their newspaper.
New or Nearly New Advisers: This special session to welcome new advisers will address a variety of common concerns and challenges. The informal roundtable style gathering will allowtime for new advisers to ask questions and veteran advisers to share tips. This format should generate common frustrations, great stories of the “good old days” and bonding. The adviser business meeting and luncheon will follow this session.
You may want to remind students that their lunch will be provided as part of the registration fee, but they may want to bring $10 to buy convention theme or First Amendment t-shirts.
Feel welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding the convention. Our goal is to make the 2012 convention the “good old days” of the future.
