A Few Ways The IHSPA Can Help You

The first days of a new year often include a variety of challenges with class assignments, class sizes and new leadership. I hope that as each day passes you have more opportunities to make this a great year for your publications staffs. Here are a few ways the Indiana High School Press Association can help you:

IHSPA CONVENTION (Oct. 18-19)
George Srour, IHSPA and national high school journalist of the year in 2001, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s convention Friday, October 19. Just 11 years out of high school, George has accomplished amazing things that will inspire your students. See http://www.buildingtomorrow.org.

IMPORTANT CONVENTION NOTE:
The convention is designed to be either a one- or two-day experience depending on the best schedule for your staff. Those who have longer travel time often like to arrive by Thursday evening. The early Thursday option provides the opportunity for individual students to participate in on-site contests or attend additional sessions.

CONTESTS AND CRITIQUES:
Information about yearbook Harvey competition is available on the IHSPA website. Check the website for additional information about publication critiques and other contests. Based on positive feedback from last year’s sports contest, we will provide a similar opportunity this year.

FIRST AMENDMENT SYMPOSIUM (March 6, 2013)
The symposium celebrates the First Amendment and recognizes several competition categories including Student Journalist of the Year at the Indiana Statehouse each March.

REGIONAL WORKSHOPS, SCHOOL VISITS
IHSPA will continue to help advisers organize a local workshop for their schools or a group of schools in their area throughout the year. One of the IHSPA goals is to provide support to all schools regardless of resources to attend IHSPA signature events.

MEMBERSHIP FOR 2012-13
More detailed information about the convention will be sent by membership email and posted on the IHSPA website and Facebook page in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, we hope you will renew your IHSPA membership and let us hear about your challenges and successes. We look forward to working with you in a variety of ways throughout the year.

Feel welcome to contact me at any time.
